where is all this stress coming from
where is all this stress coming from

There was a story the other day stating that STRESS was at the root of so many health problems. From high blood pressure, high cholesterol, headaches, indigestion, diabetes, allergies, back pain, PMS, hot flashes, weight gain, depression and the list goes on. But the point that people are finally waking up to, is that stress taxes our body, specifically our adrenal glands, which are responsible for producing our stress hormones, such as adrenaline, cortisol and norepinephrine.

What we need to understand is that stress is cumulative and it’s more than simply worry, fear, anxiety or missing deadlines and being stuck in traffic. Anything that further triggers your adrenal glands to work can exhaust and deplete your adrenal glands and their ability to function properly. The adrenal glands do more than make our stress hormones. They are responsible for stabilizing our blood sugar, reducing inflammation, stimulating our immune system, regulating our fluids, making our sex hormones, producing our anti-aging hormones….so you can see they do more than simply make our stress hormones. And every time we have to get them do work because of our poor decisions, we can easily start over-taxing them, which leads to adrenal exhaustion, depletion and burnout.

Two classic ways people overwork their adrenals when they don’t have to is when they let their blood sugar go up and down all day as a result of skipping meals, delaying meals or worst…eating refined, processed, fast foods. This causes your blood sugar to drop and that is when the adrenals come to the rescue. They produce cortisol and adrenaline to help balance your blood sugar.

The key point is that we can regulate our blood sugar by eating the right foods. If we choose to eat the wrong foods our adrenals get involved and if they are already overstressed from all the worry, anxiety, fear, etc….they easily become fatigued and exhausted.

The second contributing factor that overworks our adrenals, relates to diet. Do you struggle with bloating, gas, indigestion, heartburn, and other irritable bowel like problems? If you do, this triggers inflammation in your tummy and the way the good Lord designed the body to work is that, it calls on your adrenal glands to produce cortisol. You see cortisol reduces inflammation, it actually puts the fire out that is burning in your tummy. But again, are we choosing to eat foods that further inflame our digestive system, which overworks our adrenal glands? If it is we need to make or at least get to the root cause of your digestive problems and fix those. Otherwise you are going to burnout, deplete and exhaust your adrenals a lot faster than you should.

Which takes us back to overworking those adrenal glands and the more we tax our adrenal glands the weaker our immune system functions, the harder it is for our metabolism to properly function. The more it interferes with our cardiovascular system, our elimination system and oh yeah…the more it interferes with our estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. Did I mention almost every reproductive hormone imbalance is as a result of having your adrenals overworked. So if you do struggle with hot flashes, PMS, memory loss, insomnia, decreased libido…you need to first balance and nourish those adrenal glands.
