Do you need multi vitamins?

Do you need multi vitamins?

Do you need multi vitamins?

Apparently there was another recent study saying that we don’t need a multivitamin and that we get enough of what we need by eating right. This kind of story always amazes me because there are more scientific studies showing the need for taking a multivitamin then there are against it. Only difference is that the people who want you to quit buying vitamins and taking charge of your own health have a lot better public relations firm and a lot more money behind them.

Let me first say, that not all vitamin manufacturers are great and honest. They are no different then accountants, plumbers, hair dressers and yes, doctors…there are good ones and there are bad ones. So be careful who you choose. Less expensive, nor is most expensive always the right or safe choice.

But to think that we don’t need to take a daily multi is ridicules…Let me first lay out some facts and you can decide for yourself.

Fact 1. More than half the population in America don’t get the minimum daily dose of Vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, folic acid or vitamin E that is recommended by the FDA.

Fact 2. The RDA is the minimum daily dosage to help with nutritional deficiencies such as rickets, pellagra, scurvy and beriberi….I don’t know about other doctors, but I don’t see those complaints in my office….but I do see a lot of arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis, heart disease, depression, weight gain, cravings, and the list goes on….and to help those conditions you NEED a lot more than the RDA dosage that can be found in simply your food.

Fact 3. It was know about 75 years ago that we discovered our soils were under-depleted of the important vitamins and minerals that are commonly found in our fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and grain…..so if the soils don’t have the nutrients how do you suppose we are going to find them in our foods. Oh yes, this discovery was done by the US government.

Fact 4. Our environment is loaded with toxins in the air, water, in our homes that wreck havoc on our body (liver, kidneys, brain, reproductive organs, etc). Add to that all the chemicals we stuff into our body from all the prescription and non-prescription drugs. Let’s not forget electromagnetic frequencies that come from our cell phones, microwave, computers, TV, fluorescent lights, etc.

Fact 5. Fast food, processed, refined and junk food make up the predominate diet for a great percentage of our population, and all the refining of these foods reduces and eliminates all the nutrient value that was originally intended to be found on those foods, therefore we become deficient.

Fact 6. Lets NOT forget all the pesticides, herbicides, fungicides etc that is sprayed on all our food. Mix in their the growing amount of ‘genetically’ modified foods and you have more toxins working against you.

Fact 7. Stress is so much higher today than back in the “Garden of Eden,” which means there is even a bigger drain on our body NOW, than before.

I’m just touching the tip of the iceberg, but look at how the government or the FDA are recommending that we add (enrich) folic acid into all our processed foods. They know that its deficiencies lead to neural birth defects, and that most people don’t get even the minimum they should because they are eating too much processed, refined foods that are void of all the essential nutrients are body wants.

Don’t wait until every report comes out saying that we all need to take a vitamin….I don’t know if that time will ever come, but don’t lose sight of the fact that it usually takes about 50 years on average before something becomes main stream after it has been discovered. It took over thirty years, which is the fastest something has been discovered and applied into mainstream medicine, from the time we learned about folic acid and neural birth defect until it was implemented in 2000. That’s right it was first discovered back in 1970, but it took more than 30 years before it was accepted and applied.

Some of you don’t have 30 or 20 or even 5 years to wait. So start taking a good multi and hedge your bet….add a good antioxidant, good essential fatty acids, some probiotics, enzymes and fiber and now you should be set. There is an article I wrote recommending the 7 supplements we should all be taking, I hope you take the time to read it.

FYI…If you are taking supplements and aren’t feeling and doing wonderful, you could be taking the wrong stuff or NOT addressing the real cause of your problem. Too often I see patients who are taking a handful of vitamins and NOT seeing positive results. If that’s you, you need to take a look at our Action Steps protocols to help you get on the right track.
